pokerroom – Words in Poker:

Posted by Trix @ 12:00 AM, Friday Sep 19th, 2008

There are lots of different terms which are used at the poker tables, some of which may not be familiar to new players, but here are a few of the most used ones.

To ‘call’ means to equal a bet without raising. This then means the game can move onto it’s next phase, providing all players involved have either called or folded. ‘folding’ is the act of throwing your hand away, and is usually done after an opponent has raised.

After folding, a player has no further part to play in the hand. These are not the only plays possible, also there is the option to ‘raise’ meaning to place a bet into the pot, and to reraise, meaning to raise more on top of a bet that has already been placed. There are of course many other phrases used in poker, and they are too many to mention, but with enough practice you should easily get the hang of the meanings of these terms.

It is not just names for actions and phrases that are important in poker, words can also have an effect on your opponents decisions. Whilst you cannot attempt to influence the decisions of a player who is in a hand you are not involved in, during heads up confrontations, you can say what you wish to try and lure an opponent into calling, or folding.

After a hand you can also falsely claim to have had a hand or not to, and this can alter your table image, although you should be careful because you may have the opposite effect that you intended. Whatever situation, words are an important part of poker, and can be used to gain extra information sometimes, even by attempting to detect nerves in someones voice by asking them how many chips they have left.
