pkr.com – Knowing When to Give up on a Bluff:
Category: Poker
It can be difficult sometimes to know when you should hold back from bluffing on the river, if you have already fired out bets on the flop and turn. The important thing to bear in mind is that your opponent will have always called the first two bets for a reason. With this in mind, I would say that you should only bluff again on the river if you read your opponent as being on a draw which did not connect. In any other circumstances, if your opponent has had enough faith in their hand strength to call the first two bets, they are likely to call the final one too.

In general I find that players will call your first bet on the flop more often, and with weaker hands, if your table image is loose and that of a bluffing player. Sometimes when you fire out the larger bet on the turn, that is enough to convince them to put their hand down. Beware though that if they call the bet on the turn, your estimation of their hand strength should rise considerably. Also if you are known at the table to bluff, remember that you will always be a target for smooth calls and slow plays. For the most part, I will be able to judge fairly accurately where my opponents hand is by the turn, if I am bluffing at a pot, and usually have the discipline to chase the pot no further.
Sometimes though, (and this was true of me in my last live tournament) you can find yourself making a slightly misguided judgement and putting out a big final bet on the river, only to find your opponent reaises you for the rest of your chips. It is importantI feel, to not bluff too much, even if you are frustrated by the lack of hands you are picking up, but as always, allow your judgement and reads to guide you in your decisions.
