The following hand was probably the most memorable I have played, and the luckiest.

With (4,4) I made a raise preflop and was called by an opponent. The flop brought a four, a ten, and a queen, and so I made a small raise. My opponent thought for a while before announcing a re raise. I could perhaps have pushed all in, but decided to just call instead. The turn brought a two for a board of (10,Q,4,2). Leading out with a reasonable raise, my opponent announced that he was all in. I was fairly unsure of what he had at this point, thinking perhaps a two pair was possible, but the fact he called a raise preflop was troubling me.

After some deliberation I decided that I had to call. I was horrified to see him turn over (10,10) and due to my hitting some good cards on recent hands, he laughed and said "what have you got this time, four fours?" I turned my hand over and said "no, you’ve got it". My opponent then smiled, on seeing my cards, and happily turned over the river. Incredibly, it was a four. I don’t think I have ever seen someone look so shocked. Needing to hit a one outer to stay alive is the last place any player wants to be, but nothing quite matches the joy of actually hitting your card in that situation. I felt sorry for my opponent of course, he was a friend of mine after all, but poker can provide great elation and dismay sometimes. That’s the nature of the game. After going out of a tournament last night with (A,J) when my opponent rivered his seven while holding (A,7), I know as well as anyone that it works both ways.
